Fred Bloom (Daily Titan Staff Writer) forgets lessons of history

Fan’s actions should teach a lesson - Anyone who is dumb enough to run onto the field at a professional sports event deserves to be punished. [LINK]

You're supposed to know that punishment is the strict domain of the courts (well, maybe your mom and dad too). Anyone that can recall their Grade 6 "Civics" lesson should understand that when police are permitted to inflict punishment, that's as good a definition as any of what is called a "police state".

If you want to speak about dangers to society, then not being aware of the basics of freedom (the role of police versus the role of the courts) is far worse than the impact of some idiot running around a baseball field.

Update: Mr. Bloom is not the only unwitting "enemy of freedom" (not quite...).

Martin Manley (Kansas City Star) wrote: ...He smacked me with a wooden paddle so hard I thought I had died. ... I never forgot that and it had nothing to do with public humiliation. It had to do with pain! Lesson? Don’t violate the rules! ... [LINK]

Remedial Grade 6 Civics lesson:
- Role of police: observation, apprehension of suspects
- Role of courts: trial, then doling out punishment

If the police are permitted to take on the role of issuing punishment, then what need for the courts?

Clear enough?
