The primary purpose of this blog is to provide an outlet for my observations and analysis about tasers, taser "associated" deaths, and the behaviour exhibited by the management, employees and minions of Taser International. In general, everything is linked back to external sources, often via previous posts on the same topic, so that readers can fact-check to their heart's content. This blog was started in late-2007 when Canadians were enraged by the taser death of Robert Dziekanski and four others in a short three month period. The cocky attitude exhibited by the Taser International spokespuppet, and his preposterous proposal that Mr. Dziekanski coincidentally died of "excited delirium" at the time of his taser-death, led me to choose the blog name I did and provides my motivation. I have zero financial ties to this issue.

Quote of the Week on tasers

Holyoke, Massachusetts Police Chief Anthony R. Scott wrote,

"I am not ready to see an individual on the six o'clock news bouncing around on the ground like a basketball with 50,000 volts of electricity being pumped into their body." [LINK]

A very wise man. He obviously understands "optics". And his judgment on tasers is exactly right.

umm...its 50 thousand volts...when the probes leave the air cartridge...there is resistance in clothing and skin...by the time you feel the tase...its alot less than 50 thousand volts...more around 25-30 thousand...

That's incorrect on several levels. Taser International and their minions claim various values including 1200 volts. But more importantly, the voltage is not directly the issue. The safety limits are all about current, not voltage.

Taser International claims that the important value is the "average" value and they claim it is around 2mA. I believe that the "effective" value cannot possibly be as low as the "average" value (that's an incredible claim and I believe it is not correct), and the effective current may be a lot closer to the RMS value of around 150-160 mA.
